A Crisp June Walk – Derwent Water

Sometimes you do not need a gruelling fell climb to capture the best of the Lake District. One of our favourite ways to start the day is an early morning wander from Keswick. In addition, this classic Derwentwater walk takes in Crow Park, the Isthmus, and iconic viewpoints like Friars Crag before the crowds arrive. Furthermore, early morning offers calm waters and peaceful paths. Here is a visual diary and route guide from a recent crisp morning exploring the bays.

The morning starts with the vibrant, lush greens of early summer on the edge of town, looking out toward the fells.

Looking out across to Derwent Isle and the unmistakable, sweeping ridge of Catbells in the distance. The water was perfectly still, shared only with the local geese.

The stunning quiet bench just before Friars Crag. There is arguably no better place in the Lakes to sit with a morning coffee than on an empty bench overlooking a sunlit Catbells.

This has to be one of the best views in the Lake District: a view from Friars Crag, no bench, just pure natural beauty.

Most visitors rush past, but pausing at Strandshag Bay rewards you with one of the best vantage points on the lake. The rippling water perfectly frames the lush green heights of Walla Crag in the distance.

After walking to the end of the duckboards, you reach the elevated wooden boardwalk. This elevated path winds through dense wetlands, completely immersing you in lakeshore nature.

A perfect sign of June in the lakes: you leave the lakeshore behind and walk back towards town through Hope Park, and you are treated to flashes of brilliant summer colour. These flowers really do look pretty, providing the perfect end to a crisp morning Derwent Water walk.
